Angela Chen is a film and commercial director born and raised in the heart of Texas with family roots in Taiwan and China. Her films have won numerous awards and premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival, SXSW, Austin Film Festival, and more. She was an Armed with a Camera Fellow at Visual Communications and her premiere feature, TRIAD OF US, is the recipient of the ITVS Diversity Development Fund.  Her AFI Thesis Film OUR HOME HERE is currently in the festival circuit and follows multiple storylines of first generation Americans and immigrants in small town Texas revolving around a random act of violence at a fast food joint.

In 2016, she was contracted as a writer/director with Turner Broadcasting’s SUPER DELUXE and formerly as a producer/director at in San Francisco where she created and hosted the show BAMM WoW that was distributed internationally. In 2017, she directed her first commercial with AUDI in New York on pay equality and is currently represented as a commercial director by THE HUMAN EXPANSION CO

Angela has worked as a professional freelance producer, 1st AD, and director for the past 13 years on over 130 projects with companies such as Sony, the CW, Kia, Audi, MTV and Google while teaching filmmaking to underserved communities at various programs across California. She is the founder of BEYOND 10, an inclusive community of directors that focuses on empowering minority episodic and narrative directors.

As the eldest child of immigrant parents growing up in a broken home riddled with secrets, she is drawn to unique stories of connection between characters living within flawed societies. She brings an emotional soul and strong cinematic eye to storytelling along with her passion to inspire forward-thinking while evoking conversations of the human condition relating to class and social structure.

Angela is a graduate from the Directing program at the prestigious American Film Institute Conservatory and studied Film at the University of Texas at Austin. She is currently developing two features and a comedy series while collaborating with a variety of artists and filmmakers on commercials and art projects. Her next project LITTLE MERMAID IN THE HOOD is set for production in April 2019 in Las Vegas about a determined sex worker struggling to stay afloat as she spends another night tempted by a mysterious and intoxicating drug.
